Brandi Otto Becomes New Lovejoy Elementary Principal

Otto Lovejoy

Longtime DMPS teacher and school leader Brandi Otto will be the next principal of Lovejoy Elementary School.

Otto started her career almost two decades ago at Des Moines Public Schools as a Special Education associate at Studebaker Elementary School. When she completed her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education at Grand View University, Otto was hired at Morris Elementary School where she served as a Special Education and 5th grade teacher. She went on to become a TLC Instructional Coach, 21st CCLC site director and a released dean at Garton Elementary School before accepting her current position as Associate Principal at Moulton Elementary School.

Otto also has a master’s degree in Teacher Effectiveness and a specialist degree in Education from Drake University. She is a graduate of East High School.

“Choosing to stay in Des Moines has been an effortless decision. It’s where I’m called to serve, and it is home,” said Otto. “Regardless of the role I have held in Des Moines Public Schools, whether it has been as a K-12 student, associate, teacher or administrator, Des Moines has consistently challenged and helped me grow into the leader I am today.”

“We’re pleased to have Brandi Otto, who has served her entire career at DMPS and has proven to be a lifelong learner, as the new principal at Lovejoy Elementary School,” said Matt Smith, Associate Superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools. “She is experienced in researched-based instruction and curriculum, providing coaching and support to staff, collaborating with teachers and administrators, and communicating effectively with parents and guardians.”

Brandi Otto begins work at Lovejoy on July 1, 2020. She replaces Shelly Pospeshil, who left the district to pursue other career goals.
